The pedestal

You have pride, yes, you. I’m not talking about the slight elevation of your shoulders when you walk or the fact that you can’t eat your meal without meat, but the innate feeling that places you on a pedestal. The one that puts more value on your life than the person beside you. It’s okay; I don’t think you would have made it this far without some self-pride, but I believe your entitlement has gotten the best of you.

There is a thin line between self-esteem and pride, and if you are not careful, you either have each leg on either side or have entirely moved to the pride clan. You know what’s funnier; you might not even notice and will confidently justify your actions. But here, we scrutinize even our greatest attributes because there is always room for change.

I’ll go first; take your time to think about any pointers it might give you. Until now, I have believed that only good things should happen to me because I am a good person and live uprightly as much as possible. Can you see the problem already? I hope so. This way of thinking is hugely flawed; aside from reality being subjective, bad things have happened to me anyway.

I am not a good person; I do not live uprightly, and the meaning of good and bad is highly dynamic. Since I’m not the only one in the world, there will never be an ultimate perception of what is good or bad. But because I have believed in my self-fabricated truth (lies), I did not think I deserved to be heartbroken, hurt, disappointed, betrayed, or denied whatever I wanted.

But these “bad” things have happened more times than I can admit, and instead of looking inwardly at the problem, I am judging others who do not have my problem. Based on my knowledge of some fragments of their lives, I perceive myself to be better and should not be the victim of such issues, but rather, they should.

Not that you are wishing evil on someone else, but just your mind justifying why it should not be you. You’re not a witch yet. Although, if you’re not careful, the only other thing you’ll be working on is the evil glare. But I digress; you are not better than anyone or more outstanding. What makes you unique is your level of self-awareness and how well you can play on your strengths and mask your weaknesses.

That you are doing an excellent job at it gives you no right to look down on anyone, and if your pride comes from vanity, your case is different. No one deserves or is entitled to anything, so we commonly say life isn’t fair. It will not be good because you are a good person or bad since you aren’t.

You can only control your thoughts and actions, and here lies your power, but you also forget everyone else can. How we use that power separates us, not that anyone is powerless. So relax, enjoy your uniqueness, and don’t apply your perceptions to everyone. Face your problems head-on, not because you don’t deserve them but because that’s how you build independent self-esteem.
