If you were given a task of being by yourself for 72 hours in an almost empty room, with no devices or external distractions except what you eat and drink, just you and your thoughts. Do you think you can pull it off?

Can you live with only yourself for that long? You can take a moment to think about it, but I’m of the opinion that I might lose my mind. There are a couple of reasons, but ranking first will be that I’m an overthinker; you should read more if you are by the way. Taking your mind away from reality constantly is a good coping mechanism.

So, I can give a picture of how the hours are going to go by, a lot of sleep and a lot of thoughts, which will eventually lead to a dark spiral. But that’s me. You can pull it off, or not. Either way, here’s why I thought of that – you are the only person whose company you will ALWAYS be in. 

Wherever you go and whatever you do, your body, mind and soul are with you, though they might work independently in different situations. They will always be there with you. It’s a constant, that being said, this task should not be so hard.

But it is, and it got me thinking, why? Are you a bad person who pretends to be a good one because others can’t see your thoughts? Is technology and the internet an escape from your reality? Are you depending on other people to stay sane? What exactly do you think of yourself?

The more you ponder on these questions, the more confused you get. At least that is the case for me, If I claim to be someone who is in touch with myself, and write all these articles on self. Why does this task seem insurmountable? 

Deception, lies, pretense and acceptance. You deceive yourself, lie about things you are not, pretend to be those things and eventually accept that might be who you are. You do not have a genuine opinion of yourself. Who you think you are is based on other people’s opinion. If someone you respect calls you stupid once, you go home thinking you are.

You even start looking for proof, so because you are frantically looking for your phone while it’s in your hands, you think “I really am stupid”. You doing something silly does not make you an idiot. What makes you an Idiot, is believing that an isolated event equals your entirety.

I am not saying people’s perspective of you doesn’t matter; it does, but what matters most is what you think? Because you have to live with yourself, you are not a part of their consciousness, neither are they yours. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.

If everyone says you are kind, what do you think? If they say you are strong emotionally, they don’t see you soaking your pillow every night. Do you keep pretending or accept the truth for yourself? This task is hard because you are not being honest with yourself.

You have never sat down to filter out the external voices and listen to you. You have let others direct your thoughts and your identity now depends on everything else but you. That’s why you can not sit alone with your thoughts, because you are not familiar with them. Simply put, you are a stranger to yourself, and you cannot bear to accept that. Task failed.
