Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)

This is my favorite rule and you don’t want to know how many times I say it to myself daily, especially when I get on TikTok.

We’ll start with the meaning of the words used in this context.

Pursue- to strive to gain, seek to attain or accomplish (an end, object, purpose, etc.)

Meaningful- full of meaning, significance, purpose or value

Expedient- conducive to advantage or interest, as opposed to right

Now that we have knowledge of the context, you will agree with me that procrastinating, complaining, petty or unnecessary activities are all expedient actions. They have no meaning.

There’s none of Jordan’s 12 rules that do not require self reflecting and this is my favorite because it’s a shot on target. You cannot pursue what is meaningful if you do not have a purpose you’re working on or a goal you’re striving towards.

You do not suddenly define your direction because you read you should. There’s work for you to do if you have not yet determined what is meaningful to you.

Do not make the mistake of wanting what people want for you as what is meaningful or limit yourself to the standards and stereotypes of the world.

We are all unique. Find out what gives you joy, stay on it and improve. That’s how you live a meaningful and full life.

You think there’s time to spare? It’s surprising how many people pray and wish for the freedom you have. Or a tiny part of your time you spend on unworthy things.

Time is the only thing we are all given equally. No matter how much money or status you have, you’re still allocated the same 24 hours as everyone else.

Are you spending it wisely? Are you spending it on the things that will improve the quality of your existence here or you’re wasting it on frivolities?

Meaning is when everything there is comes together in an ecstatic dance of single purpose—the glorification of a reality so that no matter how good it has suddenly become, it can get better and better and better more and more deeply forever into the future.

Meaning happens when that dance has become so intense that all the horrors of the past, all the terrible struggle engaged in by all of life and all of humanity to that moment becomes a necessary and worthwhile part of the increasingly successful attempt to build something truly Mighty and Good.

Thank you for sharing! I feel it’s even more important these days because social media makes us pursue expedient versus meaningful

    Another splendid post!

“Time is the only thing we are all given equally” wow, that’s actually pretty hard hitting. A very powerful truth. In fact, we’re not all born equally. Many people are born disabled or born without the privileges we enjoy. But we can all make use of our time to excel. Another wonderful post and a great message.

I’m glad you are doing this work and just followed you. Jordan Peterson’s writing can be dense, and your spin on it is insightful.
