Yellow Buses

My birthplace was Orile Iganmu Lagos. The environment was what you would call razz, diverse and most importantly, crazy, we once had a couple in the compound where I lived that had actual boxing rounds with each other mostly on Saturday mornings.

I grew up without knowing there was a world different from what I was used to, I only knew the ghetto Lagos in my formative years and it’s not surprising how most of my values and principles were formed from that experience. But Lagos will always be a true love to me, and I am going to share some reasons with you;

Rush Culture – Lagosians are a special set of people, and I don’t just mean the indigenes, there is a way the spirit and culture of Lagos alternates your identity into a specific conformation and pattern. I call it the rush culture, everyone is in a rush in Lagos, it’s like someone whispered into the air that an apocalypse was coming, and that they would be hit first. It is typical for Lagosians to be in a rush, this taught me time was never to be wasted, every minute unaccounted for is another twenty minutes in traffic, and you do not want that.

Industrious – a typical Lagos business person will always find a way to collect your money in ridiculous ways, it might be really funny to you, but they are so good at appealing to your emotions. Let’s talk about those who sell second hand wears in Lagos, surprisingly they know every girl’s name you can think of, don’t be startled when you are walking through the market and a stranger calls out to you to buy from him/her. They are always so strategic in business, being at the right place at the right time exactly when you need it.

The craziness – saving the best for the last yes, I call Lagos a mad house because I don’t believe complete sanity exists in that place. Everyone you meet has a very high probability of switching up on you at any point in time, it’s like a flip switch that we all carry around just waiting for the right moment to come on and whew… there goes all my frustration… It is not strange to see a two piece suit wearing, oxford heeled man in a fight with a bus conductor, and there is never a dull moment on the streets of Lagos, there is always something out of the ordinary to notice.

And that’s it for today, I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I did writing this, don’t forget to share.. Bye for now…..
