Flickering Focus

Usually, when it’s been a while since I’ve written to you, I start by making up an excuse, or try to steer your attention away from the truth. But this time, I won’t. I’ve decided to give myself a bit more grace and acknowledge that life has been gradually choking out my passion. And as harsh as that sounds, it’s okay. If I can still catch little breaks of air in between to write you, I’ll take that over complete silence.

Maybe you should give yourself some grace too. Maybe it’s your fault. Maybe it’s not. The point is: life has happened, and it will keep happening. Instead of beating ourselves up for not having it all together, maybe it’s time we learned to shine in the uncertainty.

To do that, all you need is focus. When your actions go against your goals or when your decisions don’t push you forward, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It just means you need a little more focus. It’s not the missed days or lost moments that rob us of the life we want, it’s when life quietly erodes our priorities.

If you’re going to shine in uncertainty, you need to want what you’re chasing with the same certainty that the sun will always set in the west if it rises in the east. That, to me, is what life is: forging your own path, no matter what. Through the disappointments, wrong turns, bad decisions, losses, pain, struggles, and obstacles. It’s choosing to go after what you want. There’s a chance it won’t work out, but there’s absolutely no chance it will if you lose your focus.
