You don’t, until you do

I firmly believe there are things you will never understand if you don’t experience them. You can read about it, hear it, or even apply the lessons from someone else. If you don’t live through it, you will never fully understand its severity, even if you claim to. I have examples: heartbreak, the cold in Canada, a door slam on your finger or toe, and maybe Kdrama.

The last example might be weird, but I had to throw it there. You never truly know, and you might take all the precautions you know to avoid the harmful outcomes of these experiences. But one thing is sure: You will never be as careful as someone who has experienced it. There is also a chance you might never get to understand fully, and that’s why we are here today.

The experiences you hear about or see are very intricately unique. Here’s what I mean: There’s a particular shoe you have wanted for a long time. The pictures look amazing, the people wearing them shine differently to you, and the testimonies you read call them the best shoes you can ever own. So, the decision has been made: you must get these shoes.

Eventually, you do, but it doesn’t feel as great as you thought. Then you’re wondering, did I get the fake? Or is it the fit? But it’s not any of that; they’re the same shoes, it’s you who’s different. Let’s start from where it’s been flawed: your taste. You might like the brand and not the shoes. So, all the marketing appeals to your emotions, not your feet.

Second, the people wearing them shine brightly because it’s what you think, not what you know. The reviewers? They probably didn’t wear them for as long as you did. Lastly, your expectations have and will always be biased because they are tailored to your preferences.

If you don’t get the shoes, you will always think they are the best you could ever own. (This analogy isn’t about shoes.) So, before you say it can’t be that bad or can never be you, think again. It can be that bad, and you’ll be amazed at how easily things can change.

Please consider the possibility of that in your change process today. You are making decisions right now to avoid specific outcomes, but I also want you to consider those outcomes. Not that I wish you evil, but how prepared are you for the probability? Some lessons are only learned from experience. Remember, life isn’t always black and white; we have so many variations of both, and there’s also the rainbow.
