This is one truth that is quite uncomfortable to accept and that is because it takes away our power as humans or, as I would prefer to put it, the imagined power we give ourselves.
The decisions of those around you strongly influence most decisions you make, and it’s not a conscious thing in case you’re looking for proof. Humans just copy, it’s a part of us. Why do you think a child learning how to speak starts by repeating what you say or advertising is serious business?
If you still don’t think so, try tracing something you didn’t do or accept until you started being in the company of someone who does. You don’t immediately do it, you instead become more accepting, which eventually leads to you doing it.
That being said, why do we spend so much time trying to prove people wrong? Here’s why, whatever they say or do sticks longer than it should because it’s foreign to our nature.
If I came up to you and said Biden is US president, that information quickly filters out, since it’s a fact you already know. But if I told you instead that it was Hillary, you’ll think me either stupid or a liar. It’ll also spark your curiosity and you might try to confirm if you’re right and I’m wrong.
This happens when you try to prove someone wrong. You already have a truth you believe in, but because the people and things around us influence us, an opposing information does not go away.
So, you put so much effort into proving them wrong you miss your right in the first place (in this scenario that will be you googling who America’s president is)
Telling you just to shut out the voice will be a lie because you can’t. That new piece of opposition will always be there, so long as its origin is. What you should do instead is change your company or counsel.
It’s your life and you have the power to choose who or what is right and wrong for you (at least). You deserve people who believe in your capabilities and will not lead you astray, not people who don’t believe in the awesomeness you possess.
